Brian J. Moran is the Chairman of the Virginia House Democratic Caucus and a delegate representing Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria.

Brian took his first job bagging groceries and has worked construction, as a bartender, and a gas station attendant to put himself through College and Law school. He received his law degree from Catholic University and went on to clerk for the Arlington County Circuit Court. Afterwards he joined the prosecutors office in 1989 worked his way through the ranks to become Senior Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney where he remained until 1996.

Brian Moran is a skilled and effective legislator who has been a dedicated public servant for over two decades. Establishing himself as a leader in the community early in his career, Brian served the City of Alexandria as Chairman of the Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Council as well as the Chairman of the Community Corrections Resources Board.

In 1995, the voters of the 46th district elected Brian Moran to the Virginia House of Delegates. During his time in the House he has authored groundbreaking tough-on-crime legislation to crack down on drunk driving, innovative legislation to improve Virginia’s small business climate, and important legislation to provide childhood vaccinations and preventative healthcare. He has been a champion for quality of education and improvements in our transportation system, particularly rail and transit. Brian led the effort in the Virginia House to secure the largest investment in education in Virginia history.

House Democrats elected Brian Moran as the House Democratic Caucus Chair in 2001. In that role, he has served as the chief legislative partner for Governor Mark Warner and, now, Governor Tim Kaine working to make Virginia the best managed state in the nation. Since taking over the Caucus, Brian has also led efforts to expand the Democratic Caucus all across the Commonwealth – he’s led the largest Democratic gains in the Virginia House in over a generation.

Throughout his tenure, Brian has won a number of distinguished awards and recognitions, including being named the Jaycees Man of the Year, twice awarded the Victims and Witnesses of Crime Legislative Award, repeat winner of the Mothers Against Driving Legislator of the Year, Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce Friend of Business Award, the Legislative Award from the League of Conservation Voters and the prestigious “Tech Ten” award. Just recently, he was named the Virginia Sheriff’s Association Legislator of the Year and awarded “Child Advocate of the Year” from the Virginia PTA.

Delegate Moran was a longtime member of the Transportation Committee and the Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee in the House of Delegates. He now serves on the Finance Committee, Courts of Justice Committee, Counties, Cities and Towns Committee, and the Militia, Police and Public Safety Committee. After 9-11, Governor Warner appointed Brian to the Secure Virginia Panel, dealing with issues of homeland security in the Commonwealth. He was also a member of Governor Kaine’s Healthcare Reform Task Force in 2007. He has been a long-time member of the Advisory Board to Stop Child Abuse now and member of his local Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis club, and local Alexandria Bar Association.

Brian balances the responsibilities of public office, his law practice and community service with the duties of a family. He is a proud husband and dedicated father of two loving children, one 7 year old daughter and a 6 year old son.
