House Democratic Caucus Chairman Brian J. Moran invested almost $1 Million in the 2007 election cycle – an unprecedented amount for a state Democratic leader. In the House, Democrats gained 4 seats and in the Senate we won 4 seats as well and took control of the chamber. Democratic have gained 11 seats in the House since he took over as Chairman. Tuesday was the best night for House Democrats since 1975. Chairman Moran traveled the state over the last 18 months to recruit and support candidates. He raised funds for his Leadership PAC, directly to the House Democratic Caucus, and directly to targeted candidates

“I’m proud of the work we did to recruit and support these great candidates. It’s clear that the time and money was well spent as we saw the best night since 1975,” said Chairman Moran. “I thank everyone who supported me in this effort. We set out on a mission 18 months ago to ‘Change the Assembly’ and today we can report Mission Accomplished.”

Chairman Moran contributed or raised $711,000 directly to candidates including $271,500 directly from his PAC, $396,000 raised to the House Democratic Caucus, and upwards of $43,500 raised for candidates directly. In addition, he raised upwards of $100,000 through targeted events, incurred $75,708 in campaign support expenses and he gave nearly $30,000 to local Democratic committees and local candidates.

After the 2006 session, Chairman Moran set out to recruit and support candidates for this falls elections. Each trip he talked with business, community, and Democratic leaders to find the right candidates for the 2007 elections. Chairman Moran invested significantly in the campaigns of Delegate-elect Bouchard, Mathieson, Nichols and Vanderhye, as well as supporting the campaigns of Senators-elect Miller, Northam, Barker and Petersen. He also supported efforts to successfully change control on the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors and the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, to expand control on the Fairfax Board of Supervisors and elect Constitutional officers across the Commonwealth.

In December of 2001, Delegate Moran was elected Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus when Democrats had fallen to their lowest point in history – 33 out of 100 members. Since that time we have won 11 competitive seats including races in competitive regions of Virginia Beach, Prince William County, Lynchburg and Loudoun. He has modernized the Caucus and led to the largest sustained gains since Reconstruction.
