McAuliffe Not Qualified to be Governor Mark Plotkin, WTOP
-
"Brian Moran and Creigh Deeds have clearly demonstrated their commitment by legislative careers that are substantive and serious. Terry McAuliffe has demonstrated that he can raise money.
Brian Moran and Creigh Deeds have traveled the state for years and know the people of Virginia. Terry McAuliffe has never been associated with Virginia in any meaningful way.
Brian Moran and Creigh Deeds don't exaggerate or brag. They both have a persona that radiates a good deal of humility and have been endorsed by numerous elected officials who vow for their credibility and ability. Terry McAuliffe has no record and has described himself in his own autobiography as a hustler.
The Democratic primary for governor is Tuesday, June 9. Brian Moran and Creigh Deeds are qualified to be governor. Terry McAuliffe is not."

More Sheriffs Back Moran for Governor
May 29th, 2009
~ Brian Moran Will Keep Communities Safe and Secure~
ALEXANDRIA – Two more prominent local sheriffs announced their support of Brian Moran for Governor today, joining sheriffs from across the Commonwealth. Moran picked up the support of Montgomery County Sheriff Tommy Whitt and Northampton Sheriff Jack Robbins. They both cited Moran’s proven leadership on public safety issues in the Commonwealth and his ability to protect communities. These sheriffs join Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, Fairfax Sheriff Stan Barry, Falls Church Sheriff Steve Bittle, Martinsville Sheriff Steven Draper, Petersburg Sheriff Vanessa Crawford, Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe, Hampton Sheriff BJ Roberts, Scott County Sheriff John Puckett and Pulaski Sheriff Jim Davis.
“Brian has been named the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association’s Legislator of the Year and has twice received the Victims and Witnesses of Crime Legislative Award,” Sheriff Tommy Whitt of Montgomery County said. “Brian also received the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Legislator of the Year award for his work to strengthen penalties against drunk driving. I know that when he is Governor, our public safety officials will have no better friend than Brian Moran, and that no one will work harder for Virginia families.”
Moran was an Arlington County prosecutor before running for the House of Delegates. He served on the Courts of Justice Committee and the Virginia Crime Commission. Moran wrote some of the toughest-in-the-nation drunk driving laws and fought hard to reform our criminal justice system. He led the fight for the largest investment in law enforcement in Virginia history.
"I'm supporting Brian Moran because he will fight for the law enforcement community when he is Governor,” Northampton Sheriff Jack Robbins said. “Brian has led the fight for tougher penalties, new protections and greater investments in law enforcement, actions that help us do our jobs to keep our communities safe.”
Moran was previously named Legislator of the Year by the Virginia Sheriffs and has received more endorsements from sheriffs then any candidate running for Governor.
“Brian is a former prosecutor who understands the needs of the public safety community,” said Norfolk Sheriff Bob McCabe, Immediate Past President of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association. “I was President of the Sheriffs’ Association in 2008, when we named Brian our Legislator of the Year. We need a fighter in the Governor’s office committed to supporting our men and women in law enforcement.”
“Brian Moran has long been dedicated to the men and women who have devoted their lives to keeping Virginians safe,” Hampton Sheriff BJ Roberts said. “In 2004, he teamed with Governor Mark Warner to raise the salaries for all sheriffs’ deputies to ensure that they were elevated to a level comparable to other law enforcement agencies. I’m supporting Brian because he has always been a major supporter for the Sheriffs throughout the Commonwealth, and I know he will be a friend to all law enforcement as Governor.”

Response to McAuliffe False Negative Attack
May 28th, 2009
“Brian Moran will take no lectures on ethics from the booking agent of the Lincoln bedroom and the architect of the Business Leadership Forum. The last place we would go for a public service lesson is a Wall Street insider. For decades, Mr. McAuliffe traded access for money, ensuring that big companies – not people – were in control, all the while pocketing millions through his proximity to power. This mailer is all the more ironic given Mr. McAuliffe’s repeated pledge to run a positive campaign. Virginians need a Governor who they can trust.
For months, Terry McAuliffe has stretched the truth and tried to reinvent his record. This dishonest attack on Brian Moran’s leadership in Richmond proves that Terry McAuliffe cannot be trusted.”
McAuliffe has made his pledge to remain positive a cornerstone of his campaign.
Note. Fred Wertheimer, President of Democracy 21, a campaign finance watchdog group, once called McAuliffe “a classic example of what’s wrong with this political system. He thinks he’s doing something great for democracy. What he is is a middleman buying and selling influence over government policies.” (Los Angeles Times, “Democratic Fund-Raising King has 26 Million Reasons to Gloat; Brash, Unapologetic Terry McAuliffe Helps Party Raise ‘Greatest Amount of Money Ever,’ Critics Decry ‘Political Extortion’” May 23, 2000)

McAuliffe‘s “Cover Charge” for Access Scheme
Summary
McAuliffe was head of the DNC’s Business Leadership Forum. The Forum raised money from lobbyists and provided access to administration officials.
June 1993: Selling Access. The DNC’s Business Leadership Forum, headed by McAuliffe, received fundraising pledges from lobbyists in exchange for briefings and access to top administration officials. The AP reported that the practice of providing access and policy briefings was becoming more successful than traditional fundraising methods. McAuliffe, who headed the DNC’s Business Leadership Forum, said that people attending the briefings weren’t interested in traditional fundraising mores. According to McAuliffe: “The people we’re bringing in could care less about going to a dinner or lunch, or going into the White House to have their picture taken.” (Associated Press, “Lobbyists Swap Campaign Cash for ‘Exclusive, Personal’ Briefings,” June 2, 1993)
The DNC was hosting weekly breakfast briefings for lobbyists at a downtown law firm. The lobbyists, in turn, sold tickets to large fundraisers, including the President’s Dinner. Tickets to the President’s Dinner cost $1,500 each. High-level aides and members of President Clinton’s cabinet attended these briefings. According to the Associated Press, briefers included Matt Gorman, Treasury Secretary Lloyd Bentsen’s director of business liaison; Tom Nides, top aide to Special Trade Representative Mickey Kantor; and White House aide Amy Zisook. (Associated Press, “Lobbyists Swap Campaign Cash for ‘Exclusive, Personal’ Briefings,” June 2, 1993)
October 1993, McAuliffe hosts lobbyist “shindig”. The National Journal reports that the Business Leadership Forum was planning a “big shindig” for its donors in late November. The forum scheduled a three-day conference and retreat at the Orlando Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress. National Journal reported that donors would have opportunities to meet high-level administration officials, members of Congress, and possibly President Clinton himself. The schedule included morning meetings and “afternoons left free for golf, tennis and other recreation.” (The National Journal, “Washington Update,” October 16, 1993)
McAuliffe known as a lobbyist, himself. National Journal reported that the Forum had been headed by McAuliffe since early that year. It described him as “a well-known Democratic fund raiser who is the managing partner of McAuliffe, Kelly & Raffaelli, a Washington lobbying firm.” The group had held a day-long conference at the Jefferson Hotel in Washington in early October featuring a dinner with Vice President Gore and a speech by DNC chairman David Wilhelm. (The National Journal, “Washington Update,” October 16, 1993)

Moran Announces Veterans Plan to Fight for Virginia's Active and Retired Military Personnel
May 21st, 2009
~ Military Veterans and Personnel Bill of Rights among Priorities~
NORFOLK – Brian Moran announced his Honoring Virginia plan today as part of his continuing efforts to ensure the physical, emotional and financial well-being of Virginia’s veterans and military personnel. Moran respects Virginia's proud military tradition and will continue fighting to give our military personnel and veterans the support they deserve. Moran held a roundtable with Hampton Roads veterans at a local VFW hall to discuss the plan. Moran’s father served in the Navy during the Second World War.“From the Pentagon to the Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia plays a critical role in protecting this country,” Moran said. “Virginians have a special relationship with our military. As governor, I will respect the bond between government and those who protect this nation by making sure that the Commonwealth provides them with the services and resources they deserve. That is why I’m proposing this new compact – Honoring Virginia.”
Over a million Virginians are military or Department of Defense personnel, members of the Virginia Army or Air National Guard, or veterans. This plan will ensure that those who have returned or will return receive the best the Commonwealth has to offer. Of the ten United States cities with the largest population of veterans, six are in Virginia: Hampton (27%), Virginia Beach (22%), Norfolk (20%), Newport News (20%), Chesapeake (19%) and Portsmouth (18%).
Key elements of Honoring Virginia include:
Veterans and Military Personnel Bill of Rights.
-
Ensure State Employees Don’t Have to Take a Pay Cut to Serve Overseas. Require state government to make up the pay difference for state employees called up on active military duty and whose military pay would be less than their state salary.
Allow Virginia National Guard Members to Buy into the State Life Insurance Program. Allow any member of the Virginia Guard to augment their federal benefits by participating in the group life, accidental death and dismemberment policy administered by the Virginia Retirement System.
Provide Credit Protection for Military Families. Allows Virginia members of the armed services and their spouses to freeze access to their credit reports to help protect themselves from identify theft and financial fraud.
Protect Homeownership for Virginia’s Military Families. Virginia should go the extra mile to protect homeownership for our military families by providing a 90-day delay for foreclosures.
New Advantages in State Procurement for Virginia Veterans. While the federal government includes procurement preferences for veterans, Virginia state government does not.
Valor Initiative. This initiative will make Virginia a leader in treatment and research for post-traumatic stress disorder, traumatic brain injury and polytrauma.
Warrior Fellowship. When Brian Moran is Governor, the Moran Administration will create a Warrior Fellowship Program that offers experience in state legislative and executive offices for veterans and wounded warriors. Those selected for the program would be given the opportunity to rotate into various positions and potentially transition into full-time employment.
Brian Moran's Record
Moran has a long and successful record of fighting for and protecting our veterans. In the Virginia General Assembly, he helped create a Wounded Warrior Program for Virginia veterans with traumatic brain injury, post-traumatic stress disorder and other injuries. Moran also supported efforts to increase access for veterans to state universities and expand the Virginia War Memorial. Moran was recognized by Defense Secretary Gates with an award from Our Military Kids for his work on behalf of military families here in Virginia.

“For five months Terry McAuliffe has been on television trying to rewrite history and avoid his record,” Moran Campaign Manager Andrew Roos said. “Our ad uses media reports to set the record straight and show that Brian Moran is the person who will fight for Virginia families.”
The ad highlights two media reports about Terry McAuliffe’s record:
-
·“McAuliffe has made a fortune investing -- sometimes in companies that went bust, laid off thousands and drained investors' and employees' savings.” (The Washington Post, McAuliffe’s Background Could Prove a Liability, May 3, 2009)
·“Obama ran against exactly the kind of big-money 1990s politics that McAuliffe has come to represent. A McAuliffe victory would signal that despite all the talk of a new kind of politics for the party in the age of Obama, the old kind of Democratic politics is still doing quite well.” (New York Times Magazine, Governor Clintonism, May 8, 2009)
TV Ad: “Insider Deals”
Run time: 30 seconds
-
“The press on Terry McAuliffe’s insider deals: McAuliffe has made a fortune investing, sometimes in companies that went bust, laid off thousands and drained employee savings. Barack Obama ran against exactly the kind of big-money politics that McAuliffe represents.
Brian Moran worked with Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, fighting for Virginia’s families and seniors.
The choice? McAuliffe working insider deals for himself. Or Brian Moran’s hard work for us.”
“McAuliffe has made a fortune investing, sometimes in companies that went bust, laid off thousands and drained employee savings.”
-
·“And the portrait could resonate because McAuliffe has made a fortune investing -- sometimes in companies that went bust, laid off thousands and drained investors' and employees' savings.” (The Washington Post, McAuliffe’s Background Could Prove a Liability, May 3, 2009)
·McAuliffe made $18 million from Global Crossing while 10,000 people lost their jobs. (New York Times, Friendship Counts; Clinton’s Top Fundraiser Made Lots for Himself, Too, December 12, 1999)
·McAuliffe made $1.2 million from, and was a Director at Telergy, a telecom firm. He bailed from the Board as they fired all 615 employees and went bankrupt. (The Post-Standard, Judge Agrees to Liquidation for Telergy, December 15, 2001; The Post-Standard, Telergy Founders Share $1.5 M; Nothing for Laid Off Workers, December 6, 2001)
-
·“Still, McAuliffe the candidate could not be more at variance from the cool, cerebral and emotionally detached brand of politics embodied by the new president. Obama ran against exactly the kind of big-money 1990s politics that McAuliffe has come to represent. A McAuliffe victory would signal that despite all the talk of a new kind of politics for the party in the age of Obama, the old kind of Democratic politics is still doing quite well.” (New York Times Magazine, Governor Clintonism, May 8, 2009)
-
·“And many of his biggest deals came in partnership with prominent donors and politicians, creating a portrait over the years of a Washington insider who got rich as he rose to power within the Democratic Party.” (The Washington Post, McAuliffe’s Background Could Prove a Liability, May 3, 2009)
·“Charting a new course, Mr. McAuliffe has transformed the art of raising money for public figures into the art of raising money for himself, leveraging a personal fortune from his political fund-raising contacts.” (The New York Times, Friendship Counts: Clinton’s Top Fundraiser Made Lots for Himself Too, December 12, 1999)
·“'I've met all of my business contacts through politics. It's all interrelated,’ he said. When he meets a new business contact, he went on, ‘then I raise money from them.’” (The New York Times, Friendship Counts: Clinton’s Top Fundraiser Made Lots for Himself Too, December 12, 1999)
·McAuliffe is a “walking symbol of the wretched excess of the Clinton years.” (The New York Times, Democrats Shift Into Reverse, February 2, 2001)

Moran Begins Closing Argument
May 19th, 2009
~ Deeds, Moran Question McAuliffe Record; McAuliffe has no Answers ~
Today, Brian Moran showed that he is the candidate most committed to fighting for Virginians, while raising serious questions about Terry McAuliffe’s record. Moran made clear that the question in this campaign will be an honest comparison of records, emphasizing a commitment to fight for working Virginians while McAuliffe focused on giving tax breaks to big businesses.During the debate, Moran challenged McAuliffe to defend his record of making millions from companies that went under and drained the savings and retirement of thousands, leaving workers with nothing.
Moran challenged McAuliffe, saying, “You said you have created a hundred thousand jobs, but the truth is you haven’t. You say you built five Virginia businesses, but the Washington Post said they were run out of your home and never created a single Virginia job. You claim you’ll look out for people’s jobs, but as a consultant to Global Crossing’s CEO and as a Board Member of Telergy, you walked away with 20 million dollars while over 10,000 people lost their jobs.”
McAuliffe refused to explain these important issues to the voters, instead answering with more exaggerations, as has become the hallmark of his campaign.
At the close of the debate, Moran emphasized the importance of candidates being honest about their records. “We each have records that tell you not just how we will govern, but about our character as well,” he said.
FACT SHEET: The Record Terry McAuliffe’s Afraid Of
Terry McAuliffe has never created a single Virginia job.
“And at a candidates' forum in December, in response to Moran's claim to be the only candidate who had run a business and raised a family in Virginia, McAuliffe boasted of launching five businesses in Virginia.
It turned out that all five are investment partnerships, with no employees, registered to his home address in McLean.”

McAuliffe made $18 million from Global Crossing and 10,000 people lost their jobs. Also, McAuliffe worked out of Global Crossings’ DC headquarters.
-
1997: McAuliffe works out of Global Crossing’s DC office. McAuliffe worked as a consultant on retainer for Gary Winnick’s Pacific Capital Group out of the company’s Washington, DC office. It was at this time that McAuliffe invested in Winnick’s plan to own and operate undersea fiber-optic cables, a company that would later known as Global Crossing Holdings. (New York Times, “Friendship Counts; Clinton’s Top Fundraiser Made Lots for Himself, Too,” December 12, 1999)
December 1999: McAuliffe Makes $18 million+. McAuliffe told the New York Times that his initial investment in Global Crossing of $100,000 grew to a worth of $18 million, and that he made millions more by trading Global Crossing’s stock options after the company went public. (New York Times, “Friendship Counts; Clinton’s Top Fundraiser Made Lots for Himself, Too,” December 12, 1999)
January 28,2002: Global Crossing files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. 10,000 employees lost their jobs when Global Crossing closed shop. Many say massive losses in retirement investments. August 8, 2001: Telergy lays off 150 employees without giving them any severance pay. (Associated Press, “Tech Bust Hits Telergy, 150 Lose Jobs,” August 9, 2001; The Post-Standard, “Florida Company Owed $47,000 by Telergy,” August 18, 2001)

Fact Checker: Change McAuliffe Can Believe In
By: Tim Craig, Washington Post (March 20, 2009)
Terry McAuliffe, a Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, released a new 60-second radio ad this week in which in the former chairman of the Democratic National Committee appears to claim some credit for helping get President Obama elected last year.
In his ad, McAuliffe uses Obama's name to make a direct appeal to African-Americans, who make up 20 percent of the state's population and even larger share of the Democratic primary electorate.
"Did you know that Terry McAuliffe fought to protect voting rights and led the effort to give Democrats in our region a stronger voice in deciding the party's presidential nominee?" a female asks in the ad, which is airing on black radio stations in Hampton Roads and Richmond.
"That's right," a male says. "Terry McAuliffe defended our rights and was the leader who brought us together and united the party. And in 2008 our voices were heard when we elected our president, Barack Obama."
But there are ample press accounts and YouTube footage to suggest that McAuliffe, who chaired Hillary Rodham Clinton's campaign, was among the handful of Americans late last spring who had not yet acknowledged that Obama had secured the Democratic nomination.
On June 3, the day Obama clinched the nomination, McAuliffe introduced Clinton at a rally in New York as "the next president of the United States." McAuliffe's introduction dismayed the Obama campaign, which was eager to pivot into the general election.
On the same day, McAuliffe appeared on the Daily Show and proclaimed Clinton "is going to the White House" and said she would consider putting Obama "on the ticket."
McAuliffe later got into a comedic exchange with the host, Jon Stewart. Stewart, pretending to be Obama, asked McAuliffe a question that included an expletive to express his frustration with McAuliffe's antics on the talk-show circuit. McAuliffe responded that Obama could kiss his [expletive], but he quickly reiterated he was "just teasing."
McAuliffe advisers note he was far more congenial in talking about Obama in formal settings, referencing, among others, a Meet the Press interview in May in which he pledged to "help Obama" in any way he can.
McAuliffe did quickly get behind Obama after Clinton dropped out. In July, McAuliffe donated the maximum $4,600 to Obama's campaign, and he made a separate $28,500 donation in the fall to the Democratic National Committee's "Obama Victory Fund." He also helped rally other Clinton donors to Obama's side.
McAuliffe also campaigned for Obama across Virginia last fall, but at the time he was also eying a bid for governor and was relatively unknown in many parts of the state.

Moran Wins Providence District Democratic Straw Poll
May 18th, 2009
~ Campaign Built from the Bottom Up~
FAIRFAX – Brian Moran received the majority of votes from the Providence District Democratic Committee straw poll at their annual Mayfest on Sunday. With 48 percent of the vote, Moran nearly won more votes than his two opponents, combined. Moran continues to win grassroots straw polls in Fairfax County; he was the overwhelming winner of the Mount Vernon Democratic straw poll in February, the Lee District straw poll and the Springfield District poll in April.“It’s clear that true grassroots activists in Northern Virginia are behind Brian in this campaign,” Communications Director Jesse Ferguson said. “These Virginia Democrats have stood firmly behind Governors Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, and they know we need someone who can carry their work forward. That means we need a nominee who builds their campaign from the bottom up and who has a proven record of fighting for Virginians. We’re proud they’ve chosen Brian Moran.”

~ Plan to Highlight Aging Issues, Keep Seniors in Homes, Protect from Elder Abuse ~
ALEXANDRIA – Brian Moran announced his “Silver Virginia” plan today as part of his continuing effort to protect the physical, mental and financial well-being of senior citizens and vulnerable adults in Virginia. Moran committed to keeping seniors in their own homes while they age and protecting them from elder abuse. The highlights of Moran’s plan are:
-
Better Coordination. Create an Aging Czar in the Governor’s office to coordinate state services for seniors.
Expand Services. Eliminate the waiting list for home delivered meals.
Protect Seniors. Increase punishments for those who seek to harm Virginia’s seniors, either physically or financially.
Keep at Home. Invest in services, like personal-care workers, that help older Virginians remain independent and in their homes as long as possible.
Aging issues will continually become more urgent to the Commonwealth as the number of older Virginians continues to grow over the next 20 years. Next year, almost 20 percent of the population will be over 60. That number will grow to nearly 25 percent by 2030, a marked 120 percent increase since 2000.
The Silver Virginia plan commits the Commonwealth to keeping seniors in their homes as they age by expanding resources for personal-care assistants. The plan also commits to expanding programs that reduce utility bills for seniors. Moran’s plan builds on his work on Governor Kaine’s Health Care Reform Task Force, on which he served, and other efforts.
“Seniors should never have to choose between paying utility bills and medical bills,” Moran said. “Especially in these difficult times, Virginia seniors need someone they know and can trust will be on their side.”
Other Key Elements of Plan
-
Support long-term care alternatives, such as Virginia’s PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly)
Develop and fund innovative approaches to recruiting, training and paying a decent wage to direct-care providers such as home health aides
Support Retirement Savings Plans for small business employees through Virginia Employee Voluntary Accounts (VEVA’s) to help businesses with less than 50 employees reduce the expenses of offering employees voluntary enrollment in a retirement savings system
Protect the safety of seniors and other vulnerable adults in nursing homes and assisted living facilities by developing alternative services for registered sex offenders, parolees and others with violent histories
Make it easier for prosecutors to prosecute criminals who abuse, neglect or financially exploit seniors and other vulnerable adults by allowing these charges to be brought independently of other crimes
Moran has a long and successful record of fighting for and protecting our seniors, as both a legislative leader and a prosecutor. As a legislative leader, he proposed and passed legislation to raise penalties for those who abuse or neglect incapacitated adults. He also pushed for legislation to increase reimbursements for personal-care workers and incentives for long-term care insurance. Moran led the fight to protect seniors by making sure people who hold powers of attorney are accountable for their financial actions. As governor, he will continue fighting to champion the rights, health and safety of Virginia’s seniors.

~ McAuliffe Started Campaigning for Obama in Va. after He Telegraphed Run for Gov. ~
ALEXANDRIA – Today, Brian Moran’s campaign for Governor released a new radio ad that sets the record straight on Terry McAuliffe’s long history of working against President Barack Obama and the new politics Obama fought for. The ad, titled “Turn the Page,” began running Sunday on urban radio stations in Richmond and Hampton Roads. It is the campaign’s third radio ad.McAuliffe has run ads which say, according to the Washington Post, “he takes credit for helping to elect President Obama last year.” (McAuliffe Unveils new Ad Mentioning Obama, 3/18/ 2009) Moran’s previous radio ads highlighted the support of former Hampton Delegate Dr. Mary Christian and his celebration of President Barack Obama’s first 100 days.
“Terry McAuliffe is spending millions of dollars to tell everything except the truth. Now is the time to set the record straight,” Moran Campaign Manager Andrew Roos said. “Virginia Democrats need a governor who will partner with President Obama to turn the page on the failed politics of the past. Brian Moran has always served the public and made them his priority, not personal gain.”
AD TRANSCRIPT
Run time: 60 seconds

“Terry McAuliffe may have a lot of big money for his campaign, but don’t let that hide the truth. The truth is, Terry McAuliffe led the campaign that ran the ‘3 a.m.’ attack ad against Barack Obama. McAuliffe worked to put up the ads that questioned Obama’s ability to be President. The fact is, if Terry McAuliffe had his way, Barack Obama wouldn’t be our President today. McAuliffe even went on national TV and joked Barack Obama could, quote, ‘kiss my ass.’ The New York Times put it best, saying ‘[Barack] Obama ran against exactly the kind of big-money 1990s politics that McAuliffe has come to represent.’ We need to stand against McAuliffe's big-money politics today. Brian Moran has been fighting for our community for decades. Brian Moran will take on big- money Wall Street politics and fight for our streets as Governor.”
In the Hampton Roads version: “Locally, Chair of the Legislative Black Caucus Kenny Alexander urges you to vote for Brian Moran for Governor. We can count on Brian Moran.”
In the Richmond version: “Locally, Richmond Mayor Dwight Jones urges you to vote for Brian Moran for Governor. We can count on Brian Moran.

“I was shocked and appalled to read this horrific post about Congressman Kennedy. Terry McAuliffe has been touting the support and endorsement of Lowell Feld for months, and Lowell has consistently been one of his closest supporters, helping push Terry McAuliffe’s message day after day. I am calling on Mr. McAuliffe to personally apologize to Congressman Kennedy, but also to publically renounce all support and endorsement by Mr. Feld. This represents the basest kind of politics, and shows an incredible hypocrisy from a campaign that had promised not to go negative.”
On March 12, 2009, blogger Lowell Feld proudly joined the McAuliffe for Governor campaign team (http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2009/03/mcauliffe_picks_up_support_fro.html). After McAuliffe received Feld’s support, he highlighted and embraced the endorsement during an interview on Northern Virginia’s FOX5 (link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSecqmVaBYM&feature=channel_page). And as recently as May 8, 2009, the McAuliffe campaign featured the writing of Lowell Feld on the front of their website (link: http://www.terrymcauliffe.com/blog/weekly-blog-roundup-5809).
Roos continued, “Feld serves an important function for the McAuliffe campaign: Rebroadcasting their messages under the guise of an independent source. McAuliffe will have violated every principle his campaign has claimed to stand for if he does not publically disavow the author of this shameless attack.”
Feld’s attacks on Kennedy are available by request.

Understands Challenges
Arlington Connection
(http://www.connectionnewspapers.com/article.asp?article=328714&paper=60&cat=104)
To the Editor:
Who should be the next governor of Virginia? Who has the vision and experience we need to weather this economic storm and come out the other side with a vibrant economy that keeps Virginia among the best managed states in the country?
Having watched the debate for many months, I’ve decided Brian Moran is the right answer to those questions. I believe he’s had the right experiences — northern Virginia legislator, prosecutor, self-employed attorney, family man. And he has the right ideas — an economic recovery plan to get our economy moving, a home owner’s bill of rights to fight foreclosure, a health care plan to insure every child, opposition to both offshore drilling and a new proposed coal plant in Surry.
To move this state forward, our next governor must understand the variety of challenges faced in communities across the Commonwealth. Brian is uniquely positioned to do just that. He has lived in northern Virginia for many years and knows the many challenges we local "urban" leaders face. He’s also been effective voice in Richmond working with folks from across the state to find solutions that work for all Virginians. And, because Brian’s been a prosecutor and a private practice attorney, he’s seen the effect of laws on little people and wealthy corporations.
Brian’s track record includes fighting for education funding with Mark Warner, advocating for increased pay for teachers who make the crucial difference in student success, pushing for an increase in the minimum wage, insisting on the use of national green building LEED standards for government buildings, and persisting in the arguments to reform Virginia’s redistricting process and increase state funding for pre-K education. These are all practical solutions to real problems that affect our daily lives. In my estimation, this is exactly what Virginia needs. I’m proud to join hundreds of Virginians in endorsing Brian Moran for Governor.

Cong. Patrick Kennedy Endorses Moran
May 15th, 2009
~ Mrs. Robert F. Kennedy to host reception ~
ALEXANDRIA – Congressman Patrick Kennedy announced his endorsement of Brian Moran for Governor. Kennedy cited Moran’s commitment to public service and to the working people of Virginia. Congressman Kennedy is currently serving his eighth term as the Representative of Rhode Island’s First Congressional District.-
“Last November, families in Virginia and across the nation helped usher in a new generation of leadership. However, the need for this new generation of leaders is not confined to Washington and the White House. I believe there is only one candidate in the race for Governor of Virginia who represents the same values, the same principles, and the same ideals that I have stood and fought for throughout my career in public service.
Today, I want to add my voice to the growing number of people who believe that Brian Moran is the right man to lead Virginia into the next decade. For 20 years Brian Moran has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant who will fight for the people of Virginia. As Governor, he will continue to battle for the hard working people of Virginia each and every day.
When I was young, my family instilled in me an appreciation for the challenges of public service. Brian Moran also comes from such a family. As Governor, I know he will represent the values that have made Virginia strong throughout our nation’s history.
We live in a difficult time. We continue to face economic uncertainty at home and instability abroad. Virginia’s next Governor will need the empathy to understand the hardships working families face every day and the strength to fight for those families. For two decades, Brian Moran has built his career on compassion and strength. He has fought to preserve our environment, to raise the minimum wage, to expand healthcare, and to pay our teachers better. Despite often facing daunting odds, he has embraced each challenge and never faltered in his commitment to the people of Virginia.
Brian is a man who believes in the inherent strength that exists in one’s commitment to family and community. His dedication to public service and steadfastness to improve the lives of his fellow citizens is unwavering. He understands that we face tough times ahead, but has no doubt that with ingenuity, resolve, and our indomitable spirit as Americans we can once again make this country the land of opportunity and success. I know he will be a strong partner for President Obama in bringing long-term prosperity to our country and Virginia.
I am proud to stand beside Brian as the candidate for Governor who will represent the hardworking families of Virginia and who embodies the next generation of leadership our country has ushered in.”

McAuliffe: Like Warner, Kaine? Then don’t vote for me.
May 11th, 2009
Since January of 2002, a Virginia Democrat has been in the Governor’s office. During that time, Virginia has been named the best-managed state and the best state for a child’s lifetime success.
“What first started as a pattern of belittling the leadership of Richmond leaders has clearly become Terry McAuliffe’s game plan,” said Jesse Ferguson, Communications Director for Brian Moran’s campaign. “Under the leadership of Mark Warner and Tim Kaine, with Brian Moran as their chief partner, Virginia made real progress. We turned the page on Jim Gilmore and won accolades for that leadership. Brian Moran is proud that he was part of the team that moved Virginia forward, and he’s at a loss to understand why Terry McAuliffe is so intent on pledging to stop the ‘way things have gone.’ If he won’t campaign as someone who believes they’ve been successful, then how can he be a governor to continue their successes?”
Also of note: At a recent meeting of the Richmond Crusade for Voters, Terry McAuliffe attacked the job creation records of Governors Warner and Kaine, saying he was “ashamed” of their work. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/virginiapolitics/2009/04/mcauliffe_virginia_can_do_bett.html

Moran Thanks Military Families
May 9th, 2009
“There is no more sacred commitment that our nation makes than to our military members, their families and our veterans,” Moran said. “This year, I wanted to make sure military families know that we appreciate the sacrifice they make for our nation. And, especially to the children of our military service members, they need to know that while their moms and dads aren’t home, they are doing the bravest thing they can and helping to keep millions of families safe.”
Moran’s father served in the Pacific theater during the Second World War. Brian Moran has fought for the non-profit Our Military Kids to help military families while parents are deployed and worked hard to help build Virginia’s new Wounded Warrior Center. In a recent interview, First Lady Michelle Obama cited a recent survey by Blue Star Families, which shows that “94 percent of military families feel as if the country doesn’t understand their challenges….That’s a pretty powerful statement.”
“Brian Moran has spent years representing the people of Virginia and the military families who live here,” Stephanie Himel-Nelson with Blue Star Families said. “He understands the unique challenges that go along with the military lifestyle because he and his wife Karyn have taken the time to sit down and listen to military spouses.”
In July of 2008, a group of Army and Marine Corps spouses formed Blue Star Families. While the organization originally began as a grassroots group of military families supporting Barack Obama for the presidency, BSF is now a nationwide non-partisan organization that represents the interests of military families from all branches of the military.

~ Bank Cited for Unsafe Practices and Forced to Merge~
ALEXANDRIA – Moran Campaign Manager Andrew Roos sent a letter to the federal Comptroller of the Currency this week requesting all available documents regarding the investigation and citation of the D.C.-based Federal City National Bank. Terry McAuliffe frequently cites chairmanship of this bank as a reason to support his candidacy and an example of his business success. However, during his tenure as Chairman of the bank, it was cited for “unsafe and unsound business practices” by federal regulators, according to the Washington Post. McAuliffe joined the company’s board in 1987 and took over as Chairman in January of 1988.On October 16, 1991, several years into McAuliffe’s tenure, the Washington Post reported that Federal City signed a consent order, a severe action taken by the office of the Comptroller of the Currency short of seizure of the institution.
-
According to the Post, the bank was cited for unsafe, unsound banking practices on October 1, 1991. (Washington Post, “Comptroller Cites Two Banks in Area for Unsafe Practices,” October 16, 1991; Washington Business Journal, “Small Banks in District Pushed Against the Wall,” October 7, 1991)
According to the Washington Times, the “ailing Federal City” was taken over by Credit International Bank under pressure and after more than four years of McAuliffe’s leadership. (Washington Times, “Bank Start-Ups Get Bowled Over by Stubborn Real-Estate Recession,” July 23, 1992)
Terry McAuliffe often talks about the “success” of his leadership at Federal City National Bank as a central qualification to be Governor.
-
“At the age of 30 I’m the youngest bank chairman in our nation’s history. Had to take over a failing institution, get it back to solvency, which I did.” (AP Day Joint Candidates Forum, December 2, 2008, Video Recording)
“The reports from the Post and the Times seem to suggest this bank was cited for unsafe and unsound practices and merged to avoid failure,” Moran Campaign Manager Andrew Roos said. “If that turns out to be the case, I doubt Virginians will consider it a success story for Mr. McAuliffe. With all the concerns about failing banks and banker bailouts, we need to fully investigate what happened with Federal City National Bank since Mr. McAuliffe has made it a central qualification for his candidacy.”
Also of note, in 1987, Federal City provided an unsecured $125,000 loan to the presidential campaign of Richard Gephardt while McAuliffe was the campaign’s national finance chairman and on the Board of Federal City. The bank would also give business loans to House Whip Tony Coelho and Speaker Jim Wright. (The New York Times, “Gephardt Received 2 Unsecured Loans” February 13, 1988; The New York Times, “Friendship Counts; Clinton’s Top Fund-Raiser Made Lots for Himself, Too,” December 12, 1999)

Va. Democratic Hopefuls for Governor
Mark Plotkin, WTOP (May 2, 2009)
“I have spent an hour with each of the three candidates vying to be the Democratic nominee for governor of Virginia. Here are some of my initial impressions.
Creigh Deeds: Sincere and likable and idealistic. A lawyer and a legislator. Definitely has that down-home country twang.
Terry McAuliffe: Brash and breezy. Not the least bit shy about telling all he has done. Borrowed Bill Clinton to add gravitas.
Brian Moran: Informed and substantive. Enjoys a genuine and deep following in his Northern Virginia base. His life story tells a lot about who he is.
On June 9th, the candidate with the best organization will win. Turnout will be low – 5-7 percent of registered voters. That’s about 200,000 people who will cast their ballots.
Republicans want to run against flashy McAuliffe. They think he will be the easiest to beat in November. Moran and Deeds, steeped in Virginia politics, fighting for the limelight.”

Coal plant opponents fill town hall
By: Diana McFarland, Smithfield Times
DENDRON — The crowd that came before the Dendron Town Council Monday gave a resounding “no” to the prospect of a coal-fired energy plant in their town.
The residents were drawn to the meeting because the council was considering an ordinance that would hand over planning and zoning duties to Surry County. The measure was spurred on, in part, by Old Dominion Electric Cooperative’s offer to build a power plant there.
“We take care of ourselves, we always have,” said Dendron resident Bill Richardson.
The ordinance was tabled for further consideration.
Before the vote, resident after resident appealed to the council to reject the idea of a coal plant in their tiny town.
“What good will the increased revenue do if we’re killing our children,” said Catherine Oliver of Surry.
A few women broke into tears as they spoke about the possible pollution the plant could bring.
“The children you hear outside are mine, and I’m afraid you won’t hear that anymore if the coal plant goes here,” said one mother.
Several people came from Williamsburg, Poquoson and Hampton to voice their opposition.
Ken Ricklin was from Hampton and had a two-year old child.
“We in Hampton are worried about the effects of this coal-fired plant.”
Residents were concerned with the effects of fly ash, heavy metals in the air and possible ground water contamination. Others were worried that all the power being generated is for residents “up north” and that Dendron, as they knew it, “would cease to exist.”
On the other hand, others, who were not at Monday’s meeting, have argued that the plant will generate jobs and much needed tax revenue for the town. During the meeting, several council members did announce that the town was “broke.”
Residents implored the council to reject ODEC’s plans, but Mayor Yvonne Pierce said the Cooperative has not yet formally submitted a permit application.
If construction goes as planned, Dendron could see its tax revenues go from less than $13,000 to potentially a million or more.
ODEC has proposed building a base load power generation facility on about 1,600-acre site in Dendron. ODEC is a non-profit cooperative made up of 10 electrical cooperatives in Virginia, one in Maryland and one in Delaware. The Virginia plants include about 400,000 member-owners. ODEC projects that the member-owners’ demand for power will double in the next 10-15 years. If ODEC receives the necessary approvals, construction is expected to begin in 2012.

Poll Shows Moran and McAuliffe Neck & Neck
May 5th, 2009
~ Moran Has Strongest Favorability Profile~
ALEXANDRIA – Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research, Inc., a highly respected national polling firm, conducted a statewide survey of Democratic primary voters for Brian Moran’s campaign for Governor. The survey showed the race continues to be well within the margin of error and Moran continues to have the strongest favorability profile. Moran has clearly defined his message of fighting for people and has built a tremendous network of local leaders supporting the campaign. A summary memo from GQRR is attached.“This poll confirms that our message is breaking through and our grassroots campaign is working,” Moran Campaign Manager Andrew Roos said. “We always knew that we would be outspent in this race, but we’ve held it close because people believe that Brian Moran is the one who will fight for them. Now, as we head into the final month, they will know that he’s the best candidate for our party to win and continue to lead.”
Moran’s polling is conducted by Al Quinlan. Quinlan heads Greenberg Quinlan Rosner’s team of U.S. political analysts and campaign pollsters, delivering strategic consultation and issue management to issue groups and political campaigns. ~ Virginia Democrats Want a Proven Fighter for Governor~
FAIRFAX – Brian Moran received the overwhelming majority of votes at the Springfield District Democratic Committee’s straw poll at its annual Smoke and Roast. It is likely that a number of the attendees read this morning’s front page expose on Terry McAuliffe by the Washington Post. With 57 votes, Moran won more votes than his two opponents, combined. This is the third grassroots straw poll in Fairfax County Moran has won. He was the overwhelming winner of the Mount Vernon Democratic straw poll in February and the Lee District straw poll in early April.“Yet again, the key grassroots leaders of our party are lining up behind Brian in this campaign,” Campaign Manager Andrew Roos said. “They know that we need someone with a proven record of fighting for people in order to win in November and continue to lead. Brian’s built this campaign from the bottom up, not the top down, and today’s straw poll victory is another demonstration of his grassroots support.”

House Democratic Caucus chairman makes campaign stop in Petersburg
Markus Schmidt, Petersburg Progress-Index (11/4/2008)
PETERSBURG — Del. Brian J. Moran said yesterday that he is confident that Virginia would vote for presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., today.
“Virginia will help elect Sen. Obama as the next president of the United States,” Moran, D-46th, said less than 24 hours before the election during a stop in Petersburg, where he visited the Obama campaign office on Old Street to speak with volunteers.
Moran is the House of Delegates’ Democratic Caucus chairman and a candidate for governor. He said that he wouldn’t launch his own campaign before Wednesday.
“Right now, I am working to get Barack Obama elected, and I am very sure that he will be elected,” he said.
Moran said that there are three reasons for Obama’s success in Virginia.
“First, he’s a terrific candidate,” he said. “He will be a president for the rich and the poor, for black and white people.”
The second reason, Moran said, is that Virginians are tired of the Bush administration.
“We don’t want four more years of the same policies,” he said. “And third, it’s very obvious that Democrats have been changing Virginia to the better since [Gov.] Mark Warner.”
Moran has been campaigning for Obama for months. Last week, he launched a bipartisan effort in the General Assembly and urged both Democrats and Republicans to contact their constituents and make sure that all Virginia voters had the necessary information for Election Day.
Today, Moran — a lawyer and former prosecutor — will join Hampton Roads lawyers to visit various polling places to offer legal assistance to voters. In recent weeks, many households in Hampton received fliers falsely urging Democrats to vote on Wednesday instead of Tuesday.
“With the tactics of fear, intimidation and misinformation employed by those who want to stop Virginians from going to the polls on Election Day, I can’t think of a more important role to play than providing voter protection tomorrow,” Moran said yesterday. “I will spend the day making sure that every vote is counted.”
